Baby, It’s Cold Outside

I don’t want to give the impression that I absolutely hate the cold and live longing for the summer.  That’s not completely true!  However, I do find that the cold and I don’t get on very well so I’ve been trying to find ways of improving our relationship.  A wonderful new knitted cardie from my mum has been a great start to the cold days sitting blogging in the house.  As always, the multiple layerage of socks.  One thing that is harder to manage is the effect the cold has on my skin.  Last year a combination of the cold air and the dry heat from the heating was not ideal.  This year Daf and I have created a face cream and so far it has worked wonders.  I noticed my skin starting to react and since using the cream any dryness or irritation has gone.  I thought I’d better share this with you today as the cream involves a seasonal item and so needs to be made in the autumn – which is just perfect in the run-up to winter.

Sea buckthorn winter face cream (for dry skin)

There are so many benefits of the sea buckthorn berry (and particularly the oil) I cannot list them all here, but if you are interested do have a little google.  One thing I will say is that it has been used as a medicinal berry, specifically for skin treatment, for many years.  The berries contain essential fatty acids, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and phosphorus. They also contain good amounts of folate, biotin and vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C and E.  What more could you want?!

You will need:

1 tbsp shea butter

2 tbsp coconut oil

100ml sea buckthorn berries

10 drops bio-oil

10 drops jojoba oil

10 drops rosehip oil

Firstly, remove the sea buckthorn berries from their thorny branches.  NB: it is best to freeze the branches otherwise when you try to take the berries off they just squidge in your hand.

Pop the shea butter and coconut oil in a Ban Marie and heat gently until melted.

Meanwhile, blitz the sea buckthorn berries with a hand blender to make a sort of mush.  Then push the sea buckthorn berries through a sieve so you are left with a smooth pulp.

Allow the shea butter and coconut oil to cool slightly and then add the drops of your chosen oils.

Finally, add a third of the sea buckthorn pulp.  Combine well.  (I have frozen the remaining two thirds for another time).

Leave in the fridge to set and then pop in your chosen face cream tub.

NB: The cream is a little oily (which is great for me) but some may just prefer to wear it before bed.
